What is an AEO authorisation?
AEO stands for Authorised Economic Operator. It is a status under the Union Customs Code for reliable operators in the international supply chain. There are two types: AEOC (customs simplifications) and AEOS (security and safety), which can also be combined.
What are the benefits of an AEO authorisation?
Among other things: fewer physical and document-based controls, priority treatment when selected for control, the option to choose the place of control, and easier access to other customs authorisations and simplifications. AEOS status is also recognised by several countries outside the EU.
Which criteria must you meet?
You must meet the criteria of Article 39 of the Union Customs Code: no serious or repeated infringements of customs legislation, a demonstrably high level of control of your operations and flow of goods, proven financial solvency and — depending on the type — practical standards of competence (AEOC) or appropriate security and safety standards (AEOS).
How long does an AEO application take?
Preparation depends on how far your organisation has already come. Once the application has been accepted, Customs generally takes a decision within 120 days; this period can be extended. Good preparation prevents delays.
What do you need to do once the authorisation has been granted?
You must continue to demonstrably meet the conditions. That requires monitoring, internal controls and periodic self-assessment, as well as reporting changes in time. GRC Smart supports this, so you not only obtain your AEO authorisation but also keep it.
